Kitchen & Breakfast Room

The kitchen and breakfast room is where we tend to do most of our eating, though the formal dining room is comfortable accommodation for 10 people and is great for parties. Both these rooms get used just for general hanging out - whether drinking coffee in the morning sunshine, reading the papers or playing with the kids, as well as preparing your more elaborate gourmet dinner parties. These rooms really are as the focal point for our family and friends.

Swynnerton is all about entertaining and offers one of the largest and most flexible self catering accommodation in Hay for larger groups. Judging by the comments left by previous visitors, and the time we have spent at the bottle bank afterwards, Swynnerton has seen some great parties. That’s exactly how we like it. We will even leave you a couple of bottles as a welcoming hello to get you started – it’s a warm friendly house with a happy feel to it.

The kitchen has a large commercial range style gas hob and double oven, a double sink, and enough crockery and cutlery for a 3 course dinner party for 10. In the scullery round the back is another loo and a washer / dryer. This room would have been a general utility room / washing area when the house was built. We have catered for 10 for Christmas Lunch from this kitchen, and there’s enough room and work surfaces to delegate jobs to all in the family without getting under each other’s feet. It’s also a light and airy space to be, with bags of room and storage.

The breakfast room, adjacent to the kitchen, has its original range cooker, no longer in use but with a real flame gas fire, which is great in winter and gives the room life and warmth. The two dining tables seat 10, with a couple of extra chairs and satellite TV. The room gets the morning sunshine through one side and the evening through the other, plus has great views into the hills around Hay behind. Its original tiles and the old range cooker suggest this was the original kitchen. During the harshest periods of the winter or just when you need to warm up after being blown about in the Black Mountains, this is the cosiest place in the house.
